Friday’s are packed full of releases, these are 5 you should pay particular attention to today.
Five for Friday is back again. Friday is essentially the most important day of the week musically. Friday is also the day that the official charts are announced letting us know who holds the coveted number one position. To make life a little easier this Friday we are giving you 5 of our top picks that have just dropped.
Tora – Cavalier
If you don’t know about Tora yet, fix up. Tora burst onto most people’s radar with the ahead of the curve ‘Pisonia Prologue’ release that saw her drop an Instagram exclusive video. Having just hit a million streams on her latest track ‘Call Your Name’ you can bet Cavalier is one that is going to be heavy in people’s rotation. In her own words, Cavalier “as a whole is about knowing when to remove yourself from detriment whether that’s romantically, mentally or platonically. Sometimes we prefer the easy option since we’re comfortable, and we end up accepting the bare minimum.”.
Jung Mergs – Paranoia
Jung Mergs burst onto the scene in 2019 and with his debut EP Vibrations and Consciousness landed on several radars, including Complex. He is a musical eccentric, seemingly cut from the same cloth as Octavian in his eclectic production choices. He takes a different direction with those choices though as he goes for the more traditional approach to rap over the more melody based style that’s popularity has risen across the last decade. On ‘Paranoia’ we get a conversation between Mergs and his weed induced anxiety, that pleads for release from psychosis, addiction and destructive habits. This candid dialogue presents a rare opportunity for empathy and encourages an early escape for others from the overlooked negatives effects of weed.
Ta’Shan – Drift Away
Bombay Mami, otherwise known as Ta’Shan is back with another one with ‘Drift Away’. The track narrates a love that seems on the edge of ruin without some much needed attention and communication. But it’s packaged so well that it lulls you into thinking the track is more upbeat than the lyrics convey. Sonically, ‘Drift Away’ is typical from Ta’Shan in that its international spheres of influence can be felt across the laid back track. ‘Drift Away’ drops at the right time with lockdown easing up and more people out as this is one for any road trips or anytime you need to draw for something laid back at a motive.
REMA – Alien
REMA is really on a roll at the moment. Since featuring on the Manny Norté orchestrated ‘4AM’ where he featured alongside 6LACK, REMA has repeatedly shown that the buzz around his name is for good reason. Having broken onto many peoples radars through COLORS, REMA should now be a name known to deliver. On ‘Alien’ he does just that and again shows the range he is capable of stylistically, especially in contrast to his previous release the Afrobeats record ‘Ginger Me’. With an ever growing fanbase and seemingly no end to his ability to push his sound to different places ‘Alien’ looks to be just one of many hits from Nigeria’s young star.
Moelogo – ME EP
Moelogo has released his eagerly anticipated fourth EP titled ‘ME’, a blend of Afrobeat, R&B and Palmwine sounds. The British Nigerian singer-songwriter is regarded as one of the most unique and talented artists in the buzzing Afrobeat and UK music scene. The 5-track ‘ME’ EP including up-tempo tracks, a fusion of R&B sounds and the down-tempo piano ballad “Ugly Part of Love”. Moelogo best describes ME as “feel good music – the kind that you listen to while in any mood and it leaves you feeling better”. It demonstrates his versatility as an artist, with rich distinct vocals coupled with his compelling storytelling abilities.
