Guvna B [@GuvnaB] wants you to know it’s all ‘Cushty’

Guvna B flips the Drill sound to suit him on new track ‘Cushty’.

‘Cushty’ is the latest single from Guvna B that comes from his new album everywhere + nowhere. Guvna B is no newbie to the scene having made huge waves as a Gospel rapper and even picked up 2 MOBO awards. He has diversified and dropped a book, hosts his own podcast, as well as being an advocate for young people meeting their potential. He channels all of that through in this latest track with it having a message of empowerment beneath the Drill cloak.

For the production Guvna drew on the skills of TSB who previously worked on J Hus‘ number one selling album Big Conspiracy. TSB brings the Drill vibe on this track which automatically puts your brain in the Drill standard setting. It’s menacing, dark, fast and in your face.

But the message on ‘Cushty’ isn’t menacing at all, or dark, but it is in your face. Guvna B subverts the genres expected tropes, and although he touches on them he does it to build up a picture as a point of comparison to the other imagery used. Which blends together into a song about the potential that’s within the youth and what they can achieve. In his own words:

“This song’s about youth violence in inner-city communities. It’s about not writing young people off and trusting that they have the ability to turn their lives around if they’re given better opportunities and better environments to thrive in. It’s a song about peace because the world’s tough enough as it is without young people losing their lives prematurely.”

A powerful message indeed, and one that seems to need to be reminded to people (politicians) quite often. Keep an eye out for more from Guvna B, with his projects release date of April 3rd creeping up on us. The project boasts some big name features like Wretch 32, Ezra Collective and more so it’s definitely one to look out for.
