Joyce Ng is the rising star in fashion photography.

Joyce Ng was only 17 years old when she moved to London. Originally from China, Ng spent most of her life traveling from China, Canada and then London. Her life spent alternating from homes to schools was the precursor to what would be the epicentre of her creativity.  

It was in 2019, when the Central Saint Martin’s graduate Joyce Ng collaborated with her best friend Hannah Moon and showcased her work at Somerset House called “English As A Second Language”. The focus of the exhibition was how Ng has navigated her experience as an Asian Creative in the western world, in an industry that is dominated by eurocentric standards.

Since then Ng’s work clearly pays homage to her culture and she creates beautiful surreal images, with a strong viewpoint on beauty and heritage. You can find her work with publications like Dazed and I.D magazine.

 In conversation about the English as a Second Language exhibition, Ng told I.D “I am not super ambitious to tell the big story with it. I have produced some new work in the new context I got given. I think the most personal work will reach out to the audience the most rather than trying to give big meaning to my work. I think my personality and identity is the message of our exhibition. I just tried to produce the work I think it best represents me. Asian, female, lesbian, photographer. Das me!”

We hope that more creatives like Joyce Ng are given the proper platforms to exhibit their work. Industries like fashion should welcome the perspectives of creatives outside of the western and eurocentric mold. We look forward to seeing what the young photographer will do next!
