Tanaka Fuego creates Ancestors Encore mural for Calvin Klein Moments of Pride

Calvin Klein collaborates with four queer artists to create murals around transformative events that defined them for their Moments of Pride campaign.

In London, writer and poet Tanaka Fuego extracts a portion of a poem he wrote as an ode to his ancestors for the mural saying, “I am giving my space over to them as a celebratory platform for our pride together.”

The mural titled Ancestors Encore is located at 2A Chance Street in Shoreditch until August 29th. If you’re passing by be sure to scan the QR code to see more content around Fuego’s artwork and Calvin Klein’s Moment of Pride campaign celebrating defining moments.

The initiative has been created in collaboration with the Institute of Digital Fashion (IoDF), an emblem for change which curated, cast and directed the icons and art pieces for each city. The talents vary in their journeys, their moments and their practices, which showcase and champion a global conversation on Pride today and what Pride means to queer communities in 2021. As a queer core team, IoDF acknowledges the authentic meaning of Pride, plus the importance of celebrating the community and giving marginalized voices a platform to share not just their artistic practices, but build a discourse.

As well as Fuego’s mural in London, Sarah Naqvi’s mural in Amsterdam represents an imaginary landscape with characters reflecting queer ecologies and erased histories that are essential for queer people and their empowerment. Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley archives the Black trans experience in Berlin, and Dafne Boggeri uses masks to represent stylised Greek mythological figures.
