Yasmin Umay brings back all the 90’s feels on new track Bones

German based singer Yasmin Umay showcases the versatility of her talent in her debut single “Bones”, a polyrhythmic song produced by Thelonious Coltrane. Yasmin makes her debut into the musical scene by laying it all out on the table: her sound which is described as contemporary yet old school influenced is fully presented in “Bones”. It is undeniable that her musical language is versatile, as the beat switches so does she between singing smoothly and rapping boldly, reminiscent of the 90’s not just because of signature 90’s elements which cannot be overheard in the beat but also through her performative way of singing and storytelling.

Not long after releasing her first single, she is now following it up with a confident yet
smooth music video directed by Berlin based director, Ibra Wane, who alongside cinematographer Diara Sow, brings the song to life visually.

The message of the song is not lost in the video but rather more enhanced, with the recurring theme of getting over a toxic relationship and having your girlfriends support
you, girlfriends who are more than willing to go an extra mile (hint: look out for the
baseball bats); confidence is portrayed throughout the video and is inherently the message of “Bones”.

There’s a softer side to the video comparable to the softness of Yasmin’s voice as she
expresses and acknowledges the hurt she feels “I can’t stop bleeding” making Ibra’s vision and the song fuse into one. Fitting to the Jazz and R&B sound, the video has a dreamy yet edgy vibe to it enhanced through different settings and matching each style with the different portions of the song.

Following a recurrent theme, Ibra’s directorial eye does not miss the opportunity to portray a strong, empowered yet simultaneously soft and emotional female character portrayed not only by Yasmin herself but also by the supportive women surrounding her.

“Bones” is not about confusion and not your typical heartbreak song, it is not just about
pain but rather about clarity and moving on from things that no longer serve you.
