PREMIERE: Angeloumae – Gyara [@angeloumae_b]

Angeloumae adds a little Afrobeats to her style on new track ‘Gyara’.

‘Gyara’ is only Angeloumae‘s fourth track but she’s already showing signs at being an artist to watch out for. The Filipino born and London raised singer has only been releasing music since 2019 but has already had support from BBC Introducing, Capital Xtra, and even bagged a slot on Spotify‘s Fresh Finds playlist. Her sound can’t really be categorised just yet in my opinion as she’s so early into her career but broadly speaking she is an R&B artist that will happily genre blend where it makes sense to.

‘Gyara’ is testament to that with the track taking notes from Afrobeats on the production, particularly in the use of drums. The track pretty much urges you to get up and shake a leg with its infectious melody and drums, that’s without even getting to the vocal performance. Now vocally Angeloumae doesn’t try to knock your socks off by belting out extended notes with powerful performances like the legends of old. She instead delivers more measured performances with a more sultry tone that before you know it has you mesmerised in whatever she’s saying. This, of course, isn’t to say that she can’t give those more powerful performances, we’re just yet to see that side of her yet.

The track narrates almost a longing for a particular kind of romance or the ideal romantic partner for her. This translates well in the visuals which were handled by Meeks + Frost who’s list of credits has the likes of Nines, Pa Salieu, SL, J Hus, Juice WRLD and more under their belt. The visual does a good job of creating that feeling onging whilst at the same time showcasing some of Angeloumae’s sensual side through having her as the only character across the video.

All in all ‘Gyara’ is a great offering especially considering the video is her first official video. With the effort that’s been put into it and the quality of music, this is only the start of great things to come from Angeloumae.
